MISSION
To transform fire safety in the textile industry by developing and delivering innovative flame-retardant solutions that combine advanced bio-polymers with specialized charring agents.
Problems To Solve
Toxicological and Environmental Effects
Traditional flame retardants (FRs) used in textiles contain chemicals that pose risks to human health, respiratory function and the environment. These FRs can release harmful toxic gases when exposed to fire, and their persistence in the environment contributes to long-term pollution. The toxicological impact extends to both the workers involved in applying these chemicals and the end-users who come into contact with treated textiles. In Canada, limited collection and recycling of textiles result in approximately 98% of plastic textile waste ending up in landfills. Additionally, about 878 tons of microfibers are released into North American waters annually.
Bonding Strength with Textile Surfaces
Flame retardant solutions frequently encounter issues with forming strong, lasting bonds with textile fibres. This weak adhesion undermines the effectiveness of the flame-retardant treatment, as it may deteriorate or wash away over time. As a result, textiles treated with these FRs can become vulnerable to fire hazards. Insufficient bonding also means that the protective properties of the flame retardant are not uniformly preserved throughout the lifespan of the textile, leading to inconsistent fire protection and reduced safety. This inconsistency compromises the overall reliability of the flame-retardant treatment and can pose significant risks in fire-prone situations. There are 12,000 residential fire incidents in Canada every year, which is almost 30% of all fire incidents. 50% of these residential fires are the result of faulty electric appliances.
Adverse Effects on Textile Properties
The traditional approach uses high concentrations to achieve sufficient fire resistance. This significant amount can adversely affect the physical properties of textiles, including their texture, flexibility, and hand feel. Textiles treated with large quantities of flame retardants can become stiffer and less comfortable to wear or use. This decrease in comfort can negatively impact the overall user experience and fail to meet the performance expectations of consumers. Additionally, the changes in textile properties can make the products less appealing, affecting their marketability and consumer satisfaction. As of 2023, approximately 40% of Canadian textile manufacturers reported that the use of flame retardants negatively impacted the texture and hand feel of their products, highlighting a significant industry-wide challenge in achieving both safety and quality in textile production.
Our Innovative Solutions
Innovative Bio-Polymers and Charring Agents
FlameShield Tech Ltd. has addressed the toxicological issues and environmental impact of traditional flame retardants by integrating advanced bio-polymers and specialized charring agents into its flame-retardant system. These innovative materials have provided exceptional flame resistance while significantly reducing the reliance on conventional flame-retardant compounds. This approach has minimized the release of harmful toxic gases during fires and decreased the overall environmental footprint, creating a safer and more eco-friendly solution for the textile industry.
Advanced Materials Science
The Company has utilized the latest developments in materials science and engineering to develop flame retardants that create strong, lasting bonds with textile fibres. This approach has ensured that the flame-retardant treatment remains effective throughout the life of the textile, delivering consistent and reliable fire protection. By overcoming the limitations of traditional flame-retardant treatments, the company has enhanced the safety and performance of textiles.
Minimal Impact on Textile Properties
FlameShield Tech Ltd.’s technology has enabled the use of smaller amounts of flame retardant to achieve the necessary fire resistance. This advancement has helped maintain the textile’s original qualities, such as texture, flexibility, and hand feel. The Company has utilized bio-based flame retardants that have contributed to sustainability by reducing reliance on synthetic chemicals. This approach has enhanced user satisfaction and marketability by ensuring that flame-retardant treatments do not compromise the quality, durability, or attractiveness of the textiles.
